Workshop: #BlackLivesMatter—Writing about Race and Gender
Organized loosely around notions of the Body, the guiding principal of the workshop is that nuanced critical thinking about literature organically moves us as students and educators to reevaluate how we see and respond to one another. Participants in this workshop will explore how we read, understand, and write about literature as a way to engage with racial and gender constructs that shape the way we move through the world. We will use textual, visual, and aural approaches to reconsider how we interpret literature and, by extension, the world it represents. We’ll discuss how understanding the cultural moments literature reflects can help us in our writing, teaching, and engagement with cultural texts of all kinds.
