Workshop: Decolonizing Rigor in the Classroom

The goal of this workshop is to demonstrate how using multimedia assignments enhances students’ learning through fostering critical thinking, encouraging multiple modes of knowledge production, and engaging students in methods of world-making.

Drawing primarily from the philosophies of Paulo Freire and bell hooks, the practical work of Cindy Cruz, and her own teaching practices, Ashleigh will show how multimedia projects create opportunities for students to experience rigorous and transformative education by allowing them to connect their everyday experiences to course content, participate in what Freire describes as dialogical learning, and share their knowledge with communities beyond their classrooms and campuses.
