Workshop: Digital Citizenship—a troubled term in troubled times

Digital citizenship means different things to different people. Students may come to us having heard that term in a variety of contexts but how do we more closely consider what our rights and responsibilities are online? How do we move beyond just the mechanics of using digital tools (often labeled digital literacy) and critically consider the impacts of a digital identity and digital community on ourselves and each other? How do we all start to ask the hard questions about this troubled term during troubled times?

In this session we will consider a few problematic scenarios around digital citizenship and discuss the possible rights and responsibilities in a variety of contexts. We will also examine a work-in-progress model for thinking about digital citizenship and workshop other possibilities of thinking about this concept.
