Cultural Humility for Educators
This workshop will take participants through a series of activities to give a grounding on cultural humility, how it is different from cultural competency, and why we need to reflect on culture, even when teaching online or with technologies. Based on the pedagogies of Augusto Boal and Paolo Freire, participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own privilege and intersectional identities, get a good grounding on aspects of culture and bias, and practice interrupting problematic behaviour. As a framework that centres other cultural perspectives, cultural humility has the potential to critique and work towards dismantling power structures, resulting in more inclusive and meaningful services and teaching interactions.
