Ethical Edtech

Much of what passes as educational technology are corporate products designed for purposes of profit-seeking, surveillance, data collection, and user lock-in. Other kinds of technology exist, but they typically lack the marketing and sales budgets of competing vendors. Ethical EdTech is an online community that shares tools and techniques to facilitate pedagogy that puts participants in charge of their technology. While Ethical EdTech seeks to point out tools that value user freedom, privacy, and control, the project emphasizes dialogue over litmus tests. Our directory at has been created by and for higher-ed educators.

In this workshop we will begin with conversation around our core questions for educators:

How can we learn more about surveillance practices happening via educational technology on our campuses?
How can we influence campus IT decisions?
How do we respectfully offer students alternative tools and resources when they already use and rely on questionable technology?
How do we maintain an equitable classroom when students have different levels of access to technology?
When are data collection practices ethical? When giving personal data, what does actual consent versus coerced consent look like?
This conversation will be followed by a hands-on workshop where we introduce our directory and teach participants how to edit it. We will have a list of pages that need creating or editing for participants to engage with, or participants may choose to add tools of their own. Finally, we will end with an invitation for participants to join and co-lead our virtual Edit-a-thons, which are the core practice of Ethical EdTech.
